Best Tips on Gardening for Beginners

April 15, 2020

Whether it is an entirely new or an existing garden, especially garden beginners often do not know what to start with when creating their green home. From sketching a garden plan to essential recommendations, we provide you with numerous garden tips and show you step by step, which points you should consider when planning your dream garden.

Most importantly: have a rough idea of what your garden should look like from the start. So that you are ultimately satisfied with the result and the whole garden later gives a coherent picture, you should first consider whether you prefer a specific garden style, like an indoor garden, or a specific colour concept.

Gardening for Beginners

TL;DR We will firstly cover how you can plan out your gardening system in the beginning. You will see how planning with size and capacity is an important factor in terms of starting and having clear goals. Next, we will cover which plants are easy to take care of and what kind of plant we can recommend for which environment. With the essentials for your garden covered up, we want to show you how you can garden naturally, without any chemicals.

Many people want a garden that is not only beautiful to look at but also practical. With a few smart considerations, you will quickly arrive at your desired result. Regardless of whether you are a professional or a hobby gardener - the beginning of garden planning always begins with the same fundamental questions:

  • What requirements do I have for the property?
  • Which elements should not be missing?

Once a wish list has been created, it is time to divide up space roughly:

  • Where is the right place for a sunny herbaceous herb bed or a pond?
  • Where can I set up a quiet, shady seat for leisure hours on hot summer days?

Make your own garden plan

Designing a garden plan, in the beginning, is a guarantee for future happiness. We recommend drawing the garden plan instead of saving it digitally in a document. For this you need a pencil, drawing and tracing paper, possibly circular stencils, a fine liner and coloured pencils.

  1. Draw the actual state to scale, draw in the same plan seating areas, lawn and herb patches
  2. Place the empty tracing paper on top, draw the desired elements (e.g. terrace) and paths to scale
  3. Enter growth sizes with a circular template
  4. Roughly hatch the bed planting areas
  5. In case of mistakes, place an empty banner over the drawing and fix it
  6. Make outlines with a fine liner, add furniture if needed
  7. Paint with different coloured crayons
  8. Indicate desired colours (avoid too many different colours)
  9. Write down all planned plants on a separate list

Follow these gardening 101 tips

If you have just moved into your new home and want to design the property and garden yourself, but do not yet have as much experience with gardening, then we have some tips for you which plants are easy to care for and can give you a lot of pleasure.

Annual Flowers

Planting different flowers in a pot is the easiest way to revitalize a new garden a little. Visit a plant dealer of your choice and be inspired by the wide range. Remember to choose the right pot when planting in which the plant will not dry out too quickly.

Choose the right pot: With a large pot, you can keep much of the soil when you change the plant. Just remember to fertilize the soil with new nutrients and make sure there is good drainage so that the water can drain if there is too much of it. If the pot is to stand outside in winter, it must also withstand frost to prevent it from cracking.

Our tip: When the season is over for these plants, always try to plant them in an empty bed. Maybe one or the other will hold out until next year. Then plant summer flowers in the pot instead.

Perennial

Perennials are plants that can give you years of joy. It is common to all perennials that they die in autumn and return in spring. A common mistake that many make is to remove perennials in the spring because they think the plant died in the winter. Perennials only rest during this time and collect energy for the new season. So be a little careful with the spring cleaning.

Herbal garden

No garden is complete without herbs. The feeling of being able to get your own spices out of the garden is simply unbeatable. Chives are at the top of the list of herbs that should not be missing in your garden. They are thankful and grows in most conditions. You can either sow chives yourself, buy the finished plant in a pot, or even expose them to the remains of an old plant.

Mint and oregano: Other great spices for the herb garden are mint and oregano. Both give off a pleasant fragrance and oregano, in particular, attracts insects and butterflies when it blooms. However, it is essential to remember that these herbs like to spread and take over a bed completely, which they share with other plants. So plant them in places where they can spread out or put them in pots.

Flower bulbs

Bulbs of flowers planted in autumn bring life to the garden in spring. The first splashes of colour in the garden beautify every day. A favourite among the bulb plants is the narcissus. The reason is simple - it's the perfect spring flower:

  • It has a long lifespan and blooms again every year.
  • It can be planted in beds, pots or directly on the lawn
  • It is available in many beautiful colours

The only thing to think about with bulb plants is to leave the leaves on the plant for a long time until they wither. As a result, energy and nutrients return to the bulb and give strength to bloom the next year again.

Lawn

A garden without a lawn is not a garden. The only question is in which part of the garden you only want grass. Of course, there is no right or wrong answer, and you decide how you want to do it. But there are a few things to consider:

  • How should the lawn be cared for?
  • If I want a robotic lawnmower to do the job, it is good to adjust passages between different parts and avoid steep and narrow places?
  • Does every lawn have to be just grass?
  • Can I leave part of the area meadow where wildflowers and insects can live freely?

Take your time to think about an answer to these questions. If you want your lawn to be long-lasting, you should fertilize it a few times a year, preferably just before the rain and of course with environmentally friendly fertilizer.

How to do gardening naturally

Organic gardening is a trend. The genuinely toxic pesticides for the home garden have not been approved for a few years now, but organic horticulture is a matter of principle for many amateur gardeners. They see it as a challenge to keep their plants healthy in the orchard, vegetable and ornamental garden without chemicals.

Floor care

If the soil is healthy, the plants are less often sick. Provide your soil with mature compost regularly in spring. The organic material increases the humus content and improves the soil structure. You can also deeply loosen the soil and enrich it with humus by sowing green manure from lupine or yellow mustard.

Before the seeds ripen, the plants are crushed and left on the surface as a mulch layer or slightly incorporated. Mulch can also work wonders in the ornamental garden: Plants that have their natural habitat in the forest or at the edge of the forest, visibly bloom with a mulch floor covering or dry grass clippings.

Planting at the right spot

The location has a significant influence on plant health. If you plant a rose in the shade, for example, it will get sick faster - not to mention that you also have to do without the beautiful flowers due to a lack of light. Regardless of the lighting conditions, good air circulation is also essential, for example, to prevent leaf diseases. In windless locations, the leaves stay moist longer after rain and mushrooms are easy to play.

Adequate planting distances are also crucial for preventive plant protection. On the one hand, because the plants are better ventilated, and on the other hand, because pests and diseases cannot easily spread to the neighbouring plants. For this reason, it is also important not to put too many identical plants next to each other. Instead, simply plant your vegetables as a mixed crop. The different types of vegetables are planted side by side and promote each other due to their different nutritional needs.

Nutrients

Plants need the right amounts of nutrients to stay healthy. Too much of a good thing makes them susceptible to diseases and pests. In particular, mineral fertilizers with a high nitrogen content should be used with caution, because a high nitrogen intake softens the tissue and facilitates the penetration of fungal spores. Therefore, fertilize your plants only after prior soil analysis and, if possible, do not use any complete fertilizer, because you will always be giving away nutrients.

In many cases, you can get by with compost and horn fertilizers in the garden. Compost provides sufficient phosphate, potassium and trace elements, while the nitrogen requirement can be covered by horn shavings or horn meal.

Your essentials for gardening

Fortunately, there are numerous garden tools available that make gardening a lot easier for us. In principle, the following applies to the purchase of new garden equipment: less is more! Excellent tools are a little more expensive to buy, making it financially challenging to be able to buy every single device from the shelves.

The main garden tools that every garden owner needs are the following:

  • Spade - number one among essential garden tools. Nothing works without a spade. Whether digging holes or digging - a gardener's best friend is always his spade. Make sure you have a sturdy handle fits well and securely in your hand.
  • Ladder - A ladder for picking fruit is a handy garden tool. If you want to pick fruit, prune trees or have to attach the new rose climbing aid to the house wall, you need a stable ladder. Whether you choose a free-standing model, a fixed ladder or a pull-out product is up to you and your intended use.
  • Shovel - A shovel is also part of the necessary equipment of every garden owner. They are available in a wide variety of sizes depending on their use: Small models are well suited for planting beds, while large shovels are able to transport a lot of soil.
  • Rake - The garden floor has to be loosened several times a year, which is particularly simple with a rake. A digging fork can also take on this task, and both tools can be used excellently for weed control.
  • Weed cutter - A weed cutter helps in a back-friendly way to effectively remove obnoxious weeds from the garden. This garden tool is particularly valuable for deep-rooted plants such as dandelions.
  • Garden shears - Whether it's the hedge, the roses or the trees - garden shears are available in different designs and for all conceivable areas of application. It is advisable to always have one or two different sized models in the house.
  • Pruning shears - Regardless of whether you only need to remove a few branches or cut down the entire tree - the appropriate device must be available. You can use high-quality pruning shears for shrubs. Another alternative would be a stable branch saw or axe.
  • Watering can and garden hose - Your beds want to be watered, which is why you should not forget a sufficiently large watering can. If you do not want to run back and forth between the rain barrel continually, you can also use a garden hose of a suitable length.
  • Lawnmower - Sure, for the lawn, especially if you have a lot of it. If a large part of your garden consists of a green area, you must of course also maintain it. So a reliable lawnmower is undoubtedly not the worst investment. But even if you only have a small piece of lawn, you will hardly want to keep the grass short with scissors.
